What is System Data on a Mac?
It is the storage macOS cannot label for you: caches, snapshots, old backups and logs. On many Macs it grows past 50 GB, and Apple gives you no way to look inside. Purgy measures it and sorts what it finds into three groups.

Questions worth asking first
Do I decide what gets scanned and what gets deleted?
Both are yours to set. Add any folder, drive or app to the protected list and Purgy will not open it. Nothing is removed without your approval either. Every file is listed with its size and the reason it was found, you can uncheck anything before you clean, and what you approve goes to the Trash. The only exception is if you pick the permanent option yourself, which is always a separate button.
Will it ever delete files I still need?
No. Your own files are locked in red and cannot be selected automatically. That covers documents, photos, projects and app data. You choose anything else that goes, and by default it lands in the Trash, so you can put it back from Finder.
Can Purgy delete something permanently?
Yes, and we would rather tell you than let you find out. Cleaning sends files to the Trash by default, where Finder can put them back. Next to that sits a separate Delete permanently button. It skips the Trash and frees the space straight away. It exists because the Trash does not free anything on its own: files sit in it, still using the disk, until you empty it. Permanent delete does both steps at once. It is never selected for you, and you choose which one runs every time.
Is cleaning System Data safe?
Yes. Protected OS files are never counted as removable and never touched. Purgy only frees caches and snapshots that macOS itself rebuilds, or that you explicitly approve.
